Sources of Irreversibility

Irreversible Processes

:
processes in which the system and its surroundings cannot be simultaneously returned to their initial states after the process has been completed.

Sources of Irreversibility

:
  1. Heat transfer through a finite temperature difference

  2. Friction

  3. Unrestrained or fast expansion or compression of a fluid

  4. Mixing of two different substances

  5. Spontaneous chemical reactions

  6. Electric current flowing through a finite resistance

  7. Inelastic deformation of solids
